Review: Mocky Horror Picture Show Burns the Mario Brothers

Mocky Horror Picture Show Burns the Mario Brothers  Reviewed by Andrew and Natalie Shaw Local comedians, Daniel Gallagher , Liz Barksdale and Albie Robles met at Texas Theater in Oak Cliff last night to roast the Mario Brothers movie. If you were expecting to see the beloved Mario and Luigi from our nostalgic Nintendo games, think again. Some movies are so bad, they are desperate to be made fun of! Luckily for us, the Mocky Horror goofballs are here to do just that!  What exactly is Mocky Horror Picture Show, you ask? It's Dallas' very own version of Mystery Science Theater! How on earth did we get so lucky to have something like this?! I'll openly admit, I didn't actually get to attend this event. I'm fighting a terrible head-cold right now, so if I start to sound a little off-the-wall, blame it on the Sudaphed. I did, however, send a delegate, because this was going to be way too good to miss! I "volun-told" my husband to go in my stead. But, it di

Review: THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME gives us a glimpse of ASD, at Allen Contemporary Theatre

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Based on the novel by Mark Haddon, adapted by Simon Stephens Directed by: Chris Berthelot Reviewed by: Sara Jones One of the most beautiful aspects of theater is how it can open windows to other worlds. You may find yourself swept away to some exotic location or you may discover yourself viewing the world from the eyes of a 15-year-old boy with autism, the way you can during The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at Allen Contemporary Theatre. The theater house opens, and as patrons find their seats, their view on the stage is of a utilitarian-style set, made up of gray boxes – simple and plain – and a shaggy stuffed dog that has been impaled by a garden fork, sitting center stage. At lights up, we find Christopher (impressively portrayed by the young Eddie Thompson ) discovering the dead dog and the first words of the play uttered are by Mrs. Shears (aka Voice 1 and other roles, played by Katherine Weber ) –

Review: SPIRIT LEVEL raises spirits at Rover Dramawerks

Image
Spirit Level By Pam Valentine Produced by Rover Dramawerks Spirit Level by Pam Valentine is a sweet story of a famous author who drowned in a boating accident, along with his wife.  Both are spirits,  inhabiting their summer cottage in New Hampshire.  When a young couple comes to rent the cottage, the ghostly pair find themselves connected to the young couple and steering them along.  By doing so, they have an opportunity to realize some mistakes from their own lives that lead them to redemption and closure.  Director Glynda Welch has assembled a stellar cast to bring this story to life with honesty, humor and heart. We first meet realtor Mark Webster (played by Budd Mahan ,) as he prepares to show the cottage of author Jack Cameron (played by Jeff York ) and his lovely wife Susie (played by Heather York ) who are the abiding spirit couple, often playing tricks on Webste r, as to avoid possible renters of the place.  The very refined Mahan is so masterfully befuddled by the co

Rogers and Hammerstein's   Cinderella Music by Richard Rogers Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein New Book by Douglas Carter Beane Original book by Oscar Hammerstein II Reviewed by Grant Palmore  The tale of Cinderella is a timeless classic: A woman of low means crosses paths with a charming prince through a twist of fate, magic, and a particular shoe. Similarly, the musical Cinderella by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, is cemented into the fabric of American culture. Originally the duo created the show for televised performance in 1957 headlining Julie Andrews. In the decades following, the musical continued to morph through adaptations including two more screen adaptations and a formal Broadway production. The Upright Theatre Co.’s production harkens from the version fitted for Broadway in 2013 with additional songs from the Richard Rodgers canon and a new book by Douglas Carter Beane.  Natalie Burkhart (Director) has assembled a team that delivers a fabulous night of fantasy a
