Review for CINDERELLA ENCHANTED, Grand Prairie Arts Council at Uptown Theatre

Uptown Theatre in Grand Prairie has always been one of my favorite places to be. There's a satisfying nostalgia within the entire space, one that any lover of Theatre could call home. I received a personal tour from the Grand Prairie Art Council's, Matt Betz, who was in charge of set and prop designer and acted as producer, prior to the show beginning. Like a proud father, Mr. Betz led me through the studio black box theatre, Art gallery, house and even backstage. I was privy to the precise details within his set design, one that exhibits his elegant artistic touch to the production. Mr. Betz is a treasure himself to such a magnificent group! As I usually do, I inquired about sensory-friendly showings and other accommodations. Even though sensory-friendly performances are not currently offered, there are a few ways for individuals with these sensitivities to savor the experience. First, there is an understanding that any theatre-goer is welcome to visit the lobby or other comfortable spaces throughout the duration of the show. Also, if anyone (child or adult) feels they need a change of atmosphere, there is a separate, private room with a TV monitor that allows one to view the show, in a place that is more appropriate to his/her needs. And, as mentioned above, there are many soothing ways to be immersed in Art around the building, open space to breathe and helpful staff and volunteers to assist you in any way you need.

Cinderella Enchanted is an adaptation of the traditional Cinderella that so many of us grew up with. Most importantly, it features an ethnically diverse cast of characters of different races who are members of the same family, who fall in love and who live and work together. Perhaps my favorite part is that this is a children's show, and with these diversities in mind, it teaches that we may all look different, think differently and have different personalities, but we are all family and we are all co-existing. In fact, this is one reason Director, Eric Criner was inspired to lead the players.

Mr. Criner has been with Uptown throughout many productions and has worked alongside Mr. Betz in
creating a rich, artistic atmosphere for local performers, especially young children in their Children's Summer Camp (this year they spotlight the Disney show, Moana! Such fun!!) When I asked Mr. Criner about what, specifically he wanted to project in his vision for Cinderella Enchanted, his answer moved me, as an artist and a human. His main focus is to "inspire others to be true to themselves...and despite your circumstances, work for what you want." So true! Mr. Criner not only offers honest words of wisdom, but brings them to life through drama. As we spoke, we connected that, just like Cinderella, our situations may be tough, but we should never smother our dreams and ignore what our hearts truly wish for. Mr. Criner also pointed out that we can learn from Cinderella's tenderness, expressing that "No matter what, she's kind." We may have hopes and dreams, but blaming others when these do not come to fruition according to our timing, only brings pain and disappointment. In time, and with hard work, we can accomplish our dreams. These teachings have rung true throughout our childhood, but, now that we are among the wiser generation, educating young hearts on these practices is essential to their emotional development. Mr. Criner is most definitely in tune with the younger generations and is a skilled educator, using Theatre as an avenue for impressing important lessons upon them.

One individual who has spent much of his young life in the theatre is Rickie Jones. Mr. Jones plays the sarcastic no-nonsense character, "Lionel," who is Prince Christopher's guardian and the royal family's steward. Although I enjoyed much of this musical, it is safe to say that Mr. Jones brings the life to the production! Quite frankly, I could listen to him sing all day. But, more than just his singing, the sass and humor that he brings to this character, who could otherwise be stale and rigid, is so entertaining. There were several times when I laughed out loud at his banter! And, like a true comedian, his timing is excellent. We need to keep our eye on this one. As someone who is well trained and constantly auditioning, he is bound for greatness-- likely one who we'll look back on and say, "yeah, I saw him on stage before he was famous." Go see him perform before that opportunity passes you by! (You heard it from me, first!)

Like many childhood fantasies, Cinderella Enchanted is full of vibrant color, sparkle and imagination.  For the young and the young-at-heart, it is a treasured experience, especially in such a unique and memorable location. The production opens tonight and will continue to run through February 27th. Visit the Uptown website to book your seats! https://uptowntheatergp.com/

Enjoy!
