I don't see too many theaters who do sensory-friendly shows! But Dallas Children's Theatre has made this an important part of their theatre for quite a while, now. This is a concept that I would love to see take off like wild fire--everywhere! And, if anyone can pave the way for all of us when it comes to accommodating audience members (young and old!) it's Gina Waits and Dallas Children's Theatre!
Sensory-Friendly performances are, by design, more practical and inclusive to families with special needs individuals. But, they are also more functional and reasonable for the average family with younger children. I don't know about you, but my own kids have a tendency to be scared of the dark, sometimes need frequent restroom breaks and are, at times, hyper and hard to quiet down. This may not be your kids-- your kids may do amazingy well with lights out and be able to sit for a bit during a fun show, which is wonderful! Either way, DCT has you covered with accessibility--and cost of tickets! (Have you see those prices?! Can't go wrong with $5-$10 a show!)
If you're a parent of a special needs kiddo who would benefit from sensory-friendly viewings, you can expect the house lights to be up (possibly at a dim level,) and the sound to be lowered. And, of course, the bathrooms are always open! There's even a quiet room if you need a place for your young-one to have an even quieter space.
Here are some upcoming performances! My family and I will be seeing Dragon's Love Tacos on Sunday the 20th, but you can also catch The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe in April (April 2 at 1:30pm for the Sensory-Friendly show!)
