Review for HOW I BECAME A PIRATE, Artisan Center Children's Theater

Review for How I Became a Pirate, Artisan Center Children's Theater

At some point in our lives we've likely daydreamed of becoming a pirate, presumably in our formative years, or perhaps more recently after seeing Pirates of the Caribbean. Either way, fantasizing about sailing the high seas, calling your crewmates, "Me hearties!" and living a carefree life, free of rules, is something many of us would enjoy, at least for a time.

In this imaginative tale, young Jeremy Jacob, played by the young and gifted Philip Baker goes on a epic journey with a band of pirates! When taking a wrong turn lands Captain Braid Beard, played impressively by Marco Gallego and his men on North Beach, Jeremy Jacob finds himself face-to-face with a real, live pirate! Braid Beard soon discovers that Jeremy Jacob is a digger, "and a good one to boot!" With only one thing on his mind-- bury the treasure-- Braid Beard recruits Jeremy Jacob as his new digger and pirate protégé.

Upon speaking with eleven year old Philip Baker, I learned that he has been a student of Theatre for a few years and recently performed in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at Mainstage Mansfield, among a few other roles. Mr. Baker is a talent, indeed! With many lines to memorize, songs to be sung, and dance steps to remember, he proves to have an incredible work ethic that will take him far in life. Additionally, Mr. Baker shines at performing in the moment, with his focus on others in the scene and taking each moment as it presents itself in the story. Countering Jeremy Jacob is clever Marco Gallego who performs a headstrong, knowledgeable Captain Braid Beard, who takes no slack from his crew or his young, new squire. Mr. Gallego knows his way around the stage, uses the space well and owns his performance! He is a delight on stage!

The atmosphere in this play is magical and oh-so fun! The stage transforms from a beach, to a ship and back again through thoughtful set design. Versatile set pieces, smooth transitions through colorful lighting and sound effects and multi-functioning platforms provide a creative perspective in an intimate arena. Costumes and prop pieces are just as lively and full of spirit as well, leaving all children with the desire to play dress-up! Director and choreographer, Delany Wenger and Music Director Kathryn O-Neal display their own expertise and inventiveness as teachers and directors of young dramatists.

You are sure to enjoy this excited tale!  This play is the perfect way to embrace the Summer time spirit with your young ones! Book your seats and set sail with Captain Braid Beard and his crew.

Y'all Enjoy!
