Theatre Arlington Opens THE PIANO LESSON!

Make plans to join us for August Wilson's award-winning play,

The Piano Lesson.

May 6 –  15, 2022

Considered one of Wilson’s most powerful plays, it is the fourth play in his American Century Cycle, a collection of ten plays documenting the hopes and struggles of African Americans. Each of the ten plays takes place in a different decade of the 20th century with all but one taking place in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, where Wilson grew up.

In The Piano Lesson we are transported back to post-Depression 1936 as the Charles family’s two siblings, Boy Willie and Berniece, struggle over whether to sell the family’s precious heirloom, a 137-year-old piano carved by their enslaved grandfather with the faces of their ancestors, or sell it to purchase the land their family worked on as slaves. Boy Willie tries to persuade his stubborn sister that the past is past, but she is more formidable than he anticipated. Although slavery had ended decades ago, this brother and sister must confront the ghosts of that past and decide how to overcome and move forward.
