This Pulitzer Prize nominated comedy-drama by Pamela Parker is set in the late 1940s in the sleepy South Georgia town of Second Samuel. The close-knit townsfolk are all preparing to mourn the death of Miss Gertrude, a sweet, beloved, little old lady whose life impacted them all. However, a startling revelation about her threatens to turn their world upside down, leaving them all wondering if their quaint little town will ever be the same again.
THE CHARACTERS:
B FLAT---(male, 18-25)—This young, simple-minded man is the heart and soul of the town
FRISKY---(male, 30-60)---Unofficial leader of the town, married to Omaha
US---(male, 30-60)---a black man, Frisky’s best friend
MANSEL---(male, any age)---a harmless redneck, married to Marcela
MR. MOZEL---(male, 35+)---the town bigot who “don’t like nobody”
OMAHA---(female, 30-60)---Frisky’s cute, stylish, and bossy wife
JIMMY DEEANNE---(female, 25-45)---thoughtless, selfish, pretty, must be a very good singer
RUBY---(female, 20+)---works at the hair salon
MARCELA---(female, any age)---Mansel’s good natured wife
DOC---(male, 40+)---knows everybody’s secrets but “he ain’t tellin”
JUNE---(male, 30+)---the town undertaker, the living make him nervous
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Performers auditioning for the role of Jimmy Deeanne should prepare a short A CAPELLA verse or chorus from a traditional gospel song.
SECOND SAMUEL will begin rehearsals on January 2, 2024, and will play February 2-18. Scripts will be available as soon as a cast list is announced following auditions in Mid-December and cast members will be expected to be familiar with the show and with their lines (though not officially OFF-BOOK) when rehearsals begin. Rehearsals will be Sunday-Thursday evenings from 6:30-9:30pm through the month of January. Performances will be February 2,3,8,9,10,15,16,17 at 7:30 pm, and February 4, 11, and 18 at 2:00 pm. There may be a Wednesday evening sponsor performance added on either February 7 or 14.
