Fire and Air
Uptown Players is currently presenting the regional premier of Fire and Air by Terrence McNally. It is the story of Ballets Russes founder Sergei Diaghilev who discovers the unprecedented talents of dancer Vaslav Nijinksy, and how their relationship builds and ultimately crumbles as they struggle with their own individual differences and demons. Ultimately, it is their creative differences and ambitions that drive them apart.
Director Cheryl Denson has assembled an incredible cast who breathe life and depth into each character. The set, impeccably designed by Donna Marquet, is beautiful and provides the perfect setting for the action. Lighting by Kyle Harris, and Sound by Joshua Nguyen are flawless. Costumes by Suzi Cranford and Hair & Makeup by Michael B. Moore are exquisite.
Patrick Bynane is the driving force of the play. His portrayal of Sergei displays so many layers as he navigates the passion and tension of this man so beautifully. Dunya, his longsuffering companion and friend, is played by Lisa Fairchild with strength and a compassion for Sergei evident in each interaction. Marianne Galloway gracefully embodies Misia who deeply loves Sergei and provides financial support of her friend who can never return the love that she so desires from him. Aaron Cash as Dimitry is Sergei’s long-time friend and past lover who comes to work for Sergei. He and Sergei have great chemistry together and a strong bond of friendship. The focus of Sergei’s world is Vaslav Nijinsky (Dominic Pecikonis), the young dancer unlike no other. Pecikonis delivers a graceful and touching performance of a man with determination, vision, and conflict. As Nijinsky exits to follow his destiny, Danny Venegas enters as Leonide Massine, another young dancer who aspires to be in Sergei’s company and to be the next Nijinsky. Sergei welcomes him, but no one can replace Nijinsky.
