Theatre Frisco’s production of They’re Playing Our Song is a delightful musical play by
Neil Simon. Directed by Andi Allen, the story centers on the relationship of composer
Vernon Gersch (Simon Heimersson) and lyricist Sonia Walsk (Donna Marie Knight) who
has come to Gersch to add music to some new writings. The relationship of this
unlikely duo turns from collaborative to romantic, although Walsk is still tethered to an
ex-lover to whom she cannot seem to let go. Will the relationship ever stand a chance?
Knight is wonderful in this role, bringing enormous energy and life to Walsk. Her
energetic delivery and bounding playfulness are a stark contrast to Heimersson’s
Gersch whose demeanor is more stoic and rigid. He’s a bit stuffy where she is a free
spirit and never skips a beat. And her stunning vocals make you love her even more.
Troy Murray, Nic Hamil, Danny Vanegas, Audrey Reidling, Evelynn Wright and Delaney
Wenger comprise the ensemble of three men and three women who occasionally
swoop in for back-up vocals, dancing, and seamless set changes.

Staging and set design by Rodney Dobbs and Josh Hensley was simple with a baby
grand piano on a raised platform center stage and an open stage to accommodate an
easy flow of props and furniture placement and removal. Lighting and sound design by
Hensley and Keyes Larson set the perfect tone. Music Director, M. Shane Hurst and
the band provided a well-balanced accompaniment for the cast. And Sakura Brunette’s
costumes were appropriately reflective of the time.
They’re Playing Out Song runs for one more weekend. Performance times are Friday at
8pm, two shows Saturday at 2:30pm and 8pm, and Sunday at 2:30pm. Don’t delay!
