Brief Synopsis:
Surviving Grace is a comedy about Alzheimer's. While comedy and Alzheimer's are two words that most people wouldn't think of pairing in the same sentence, this play shows us how, even in the saddest of circumstances and though it may not heal a physical illness, humor can heal the soul. At first glance, the Griswalds seem like a typical middle-class family coping with their mother's illness. Given the opportunity to try an experimental treatment for Alzheimer’s patients, Grace rallies in what at first promises a second chance, as she and her daughter confront old age with laughter and courage. (dramatic comedy)

Available Roles: 4 women, 2 men, 1 any
Kate Griswald – female-presenting, Late 20s-Late 30s – Grace’s daughter – sharp, feisty, and self-deprecating. She works hard to balance her professional life as a sitcom writer with the somewhat tumultuous relationship she has with her mother.

Grace Griswald – female-presenting, 50s-60s – Kate’s mother – a proper, well-dressed woman who wants everything to be perfect, including herself and her daughter. She is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, forcing her family to adjust to her rapidly shifting reality.

Jack Griswald – male-presenting, 50s-60s – Kate’s father and Grace’s husband. He struggles alongside his daughter to manage the impacts of his wife’s condition and finds he can’t quite weather the storm.

Sam Gelman – male-presenting, 30s-40s – A genuinely caring doctor who treats Grace using experimental medication with surprising results. He and Kate eventually become romantically involved.

Lorna – female-presenting, 40s-50s – A sweet, attractive “younger” woman who becomes involved with Jack after he and Grace split up, mid-illness.

Madge Wellington – female-presenting, 50s – A diva and the star of Kate’s sitcom (Order Up!)

Marty, Doctors, Morton, et al – Any age/gender - One versatile actor to play Kate’s assistant as well as other doctors, etc.

All roles are available. Seeking a diverse cast! Actors playing Kate and Sam must be comfortable with on stage kissing/intimacy - intimacy coordinator will be utilized.
