Goosebumps: Phantom of the Auditorium
Just in time for spooky season, CenterStage Theatre Works raises the curtain on Goosebumps: Phantom of the Auditorium, the musical adaptation of R.L. Stine's bestselling book, running October 8–18 at the Frisco Discovery Center.
Best friends Brooke and Zeke can't believe their luck when their middle school drama teacher, Ms. Walker, finally stages The Phantom, a play nobody has dared perform in decades. There's a reason for that. Legend says the last time it went up, the lead actor vanished on opening night and was never seen again. Now strange messages are appearing, sets are being sabotaged, and someone (or something) is lurking beneath the stage.
Cast features Melania Macdonald as Brooke, one of your reviewers, Troy Murray, as Zeke, Nick Merritt as Brian, Cam Hayes as Emile, Carol Rice as Ms. Walker (her first musical in over 20 years), and Olivia Wilson as Tina.
About the Story
When R.L. Stine launched Goosebumps in 1992, he gave a generation of young readers their first taste of horror: genuinely creepy, reliably funny, and never too scary to finish. The series went on to become one of the bestselling children's book franchises of all time. Phantom of the Auditorium (1994) is Stine's playful riff on Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera, swapping the Paris Opera House for a school auditorium and the tragic masked genius for a mystery any theatre kid will recognize: what really lives under the stage? The musical adaptation keeps the book's cliffhanger rhythm and adds songs that make the case for theatre itself as the bravest thing a kid can do.
About This Production
Director Charlotte Taylor stages the show in the Discovery Center's intimate black box, transforming the space into the haunted auditorium itself, so the audience sits right inside the story. In the tradition of CenterStage's other shows for youth and families, an all-adult cast steps into the shoes of middle schoolers, bringing big comic energy and real vocal firepower to a story about friendship, nerve, and opening-night jitters taken to the extreme.
The creative team includes Charlotte Taylor (Director), Brian Sullivan (Assistant Director), Jared Duncan (Music Director), Ariel Ross (Choreographer), Mike Straube (Scenic Design), Becky Buehner, Alison Kingwell, and Laurel Merritt (Costumes), Avery Arnold (Stage Manager), and Melanie Peterman (Producer).
Recommended for ages 8+ and the grown-ups brave enough to bring them.
