I absolutely love a good British farce. The chaos, the rapid-fire pacing, and the utterly ridiculous storylines are what make this genre so much fun. When done well, a farce can be some of the most entertaining theatre you’ll experience, and The Cottage at Theatre Frisco is a perfect example of the genre at its best. Filled with sordid affairs, hilarious misunderstandings, unexpected revelations, and a finale you won't see coming, this production delivers laughter from beginning to end. The Frisco Discovery Center Black Box Theatre is the ideal venue for this intimate, high-energy production, and the cast fully embraces every moment of this two-hour romp.
Director Mikey Abrams assembled a solid ensemble of comedic actors who demonstrated excellent chemistry, impeccable timing, and a command of the fast-paced material. Rodney Dobbs' set design created a charming, cottage-chic atmosphere, complete with lovely furnishings and beautifully painted walls. Costumes by Michael Robinson and Dallas Costume Shoppe perfectly suited the characters and setting, while Rachel Velasco's props were spot-on. Josh Hensley's lighting and sound designs were simple, effective, and appropriate for the production.
Sylvia (Kristin Sutton Ford) and Beau (Kevin Moore) have met for their once annual tryst at his mother’s cottage. Beau is suave and Sylvia is wildly in love with him. When she decides it is time to reveal their secret to their spouses, Marjorie (Newsha Sadri) and Clarke (Jake Shanahan), they soon arrive and the chaos begins. If that isn’t enough, Dierdre (Skyler Malone), yet another lover in this web of infidelity, enters the picture being pursued by her “murderous” husband Richard (Joshua Hawkins) who, turns out, isn’t exactly who he says he is.
The chemistry among this cast is absolutely electric. Their interactions are seamless, and they play off one another brilliantly. Each actor was perfectly suited to their role, maintaining the energy and pacing throughout the entire production. They completely embodied their characters, bringing them to life through every vocal inflection, physical mannerism, and facial expression. Bravo to you all!
The Cottage is a thoroughly entertaining evening of theatre and a wonderful reminder of just how much fun a well-executed farce can be. The production is tight and the actors are wonderfully zany. It is a two-hour, laugh-inducing joyride that is a must see! The show runs for two more weekends, and I highly recommend you get tickets as soon as possible. You’ll be glad you did.
