Who doesn’t love a good murder mystery…one of those creepy stories that keeps you in suspense wondering what is going to happen next? Well, Runway Theatre has got one for you!
To Die For is the intriguing story of Clara Woods, a famous romance writer, who lives alone in an old gothic mansion filled with trap doors, hidden mazes, and an impressively hidden bar. Clara loves playing mind games, and her very existence is shrouded in mystery and rumor. Enter a seemingly timid new assistant and a visit from ghostly character of her imagination, and things get very interesting. No one is who they seem, and the story begins to twist and turn, leading to a shocking ending.
A most impressive and intimate set welcomes you as you enter the theatre. I was particularly impressed with the dimensional design and use of the space, the colors selected, and the furnishings. There is so much attention to detail that you feel as though you are actually in the house. It is a beautiful set and one of the best I have seen recently. Suspenseful music, eerie sound effects, and lighting are spot on.
Director Emily-Ann Moriarty-Phillips has assembled a talented cast to take us on the journey. Cory Carter convincingly plays the confident and manipulative writer, Clara. She is always in control and establishes dominance very quickly to anyone in her presence. Grace Hunter (Lexie Conner Perry) eagerly wants to become the new assistant to her favorite writer. She is perfectly timid and plainly dressed, and we soon discover she has ulterior motives for becoming so close to Clara. The previous assistant, Janet Bailey (Debbie Reynolds) was pushed to an untimely end and all suspicions point to Clara. Perry easily shifts from the mousey to worthy opponent very effectively. Greg Kozakis is the mysterious Edward, who also has devious plans for the unsuspecting Clara. Kozakis adds comic relief to lighten the plot.
