On Golden Pond is one of those plays that you can’t help but love. It is a timeless story of love, family,
growing old that is so relatable. The script is gold, and Garland Civic Theatre’s production is wonderful, hitting all the feels.

Director Patty Granville has assembled an amazing ensemble cast that brings this show to life, and
embraces the script’s wit, humor, and emotion. Mark Hawkins designed a beautiful set reminiscent of
an old lake cottage, and costumes by Kerra Sims, lighting by Hank Baldree, and sound by Allison Larrea were just right.
Tom McWhorter and Sally Soldo deliver strong performances as Norman and Ethyl Thayer
(respectively). They have excellent chemistry together and are charming as an aging couple dealing with the affects of growing old. Their interactions will put a smile on your face. Whitney Golin plays their daughter Chelsea with the right amount of “chip on the shoulder” and genuine affection for her parents.

She balances her embattled relationship with her father well without coming across too much as a
victim. Steve Golin gives a terrific performance as Charlie, the mailman. His accent and infectious laugh provide some great moments in the show. Russell Sims is Chelsea’s dentist boyfriend Bill, and Sims is fun to watch as the city boy navigating his first visit to the lake and his first encounter with Norman. And last, but not least, is Joshua Brown as Billy, the young son of Bill and the injection of youthful energy that will change Norman. Brown is delightful in this role and his interactions with Norman are charming and heartfelt.
