Carrie: The Musical
I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting. I was told to expect to see blood and murder, so I braced myself. I've never been one to enjoy horror movies, even psychological thrillers can push the limits for me. Three episodes of Yellowjackets had me waking up with nightmares and removing it from my watchlist. Rollercoasters at a theme are too much for me--plainly said, I don't enjoy being frightened, especially for "fun." But, my close friends, Julie Robles (from our Spotlight On! Podcast ) and Albie Robles (of albieroblesvoice.com, and Spotlight On!) love this kind of thing! And, I'm willing to push myself out of my comfort zone, if I feel like there's a good need for it.
Carrie: The Musical was not what I expected, and what surprised me was the empathy I felt, even for Momma (Laura Lester.) I'm not a Stephen King reader, but, I may be checking this book out at my local library after seeing this production! I definitely want to know more.
Chloe Stout plays the titled character, Carrie, who is tormented by bullying at her school in Chamberlain, Michigan. Momma (Laura Lester) has tried with all her nature to raise a good, Christian daughter. The issue, however, is that Momma is more than a little confused (likely due to abuse) to know the best ways to do this. Her tactics toward her daughter are abusive, but Lester's approach to this character are clear-- she wants what's best for Carrie, but misunderstands just how damaging her discipline of Carrie is. And, likewise, Stout's Carrie tries to see that this is Momma's motive and aims to please her and obey, all while dealing with the torment inside her. Momma has always told Carrie that she's special, but Carrie's spiritual gifts aren't exactly the same ones we learn about in church--yet another surprise I wasn't expecting! The relational dynamic between Stout and Lester is truly beautiful and worth witnessing!
Directors Spencer Bovaird and Leslie Navarro-Bovaird have organized a large ensemble cast in an intimate space for an audience of three rows that seats around 80-100 seats. Bovaird also handled the set design, while Navarro-Bovaird handled the choreography.
I may not be one for scary stories, but I'm very glad I made an exception for this one! Tickets can be purchased at lctthecolony.com . Carrie: The Musical runs Fridays and Saturdays, August, 1-23 with all performances at 8:00pm.
